I LOVE ADRIAN
– A Tribute to the early rebel
of New Netherland –
On Friday, February 8th, 2019 TNC New York organized ‘I LOVE ADRIAEN – A Tribute to the early rebel of New Netherland’. Adriaen van der Donck (1618-1655) was the first lawyer in the Dutch colony, a leader in the political life of New Amsterdam, and a rebel who made an effort for a Dutch-style republican government in the Dutch West India Company-run trading post.
After a short lecture by Adriaen’s biographer Julie van den Hout, about his life, his deep admiration for New Netherland and his early vision, we presented I LOVE ADRIAEN, by Gerhardus van Wilgen. In this monologue play the narrator, performed by Annemarie Hagenaars, comes to terms with the disappearance of her estranged step-sister Mary, who fell for a man who’s born 400 years ago. He is an ambitious Dutch lawyer who had big plans for America. Inspired by the Beguine mystics Mary ventures into the wilderness to find her love; Adriaen van der D…
On Saturday, December 1st, 2018, we had a very honorable guest at The Netherland Club. Sinterklaas and his Pieten visited us during the annual Sinterklaas party of TNC and ’t Klokhuis.
We were all very surprised that Saint Nicholas and his helpers came this year by helicopter to New York. On the first hand, this seemed to be a very smart idea, but it soon became clear that in the full packed ‘Sinterkopter’ all chocolate letters were broken. What to do? The chocolate Piet promised to fix it. But unfortunately, he seemed unable to puzzle all the small little pieces of chocolate back into complete letters again.
It was a mess, and the question was, how will this ever work out? Luckily, the children came up with the idea to melt all the chocolate pieces and to make new letters. Mr. Sjaakie of the Li-lack Chocolate Factory offered to help us and made together with the Chocolate Piet he mad new letters for all the children. Piet and Mr. Sjaakie succeeded to bring all the new chocolate letters, just in time, to Sinterklaas at The Netherland Club. A happy ending, which we celebrated with beautiful presents, many pepernoten and… delicious chocolate letters for all the children. It was a fantastic Sinterklaas party.

And, a good opportunity to see many friends at the last TNC event before the summer break. This year the event was totally sold-out. Over 250 people attended this Dutch culinary fish event an enjoyed the Dutch conviviality at TNC. And although we had a lot of visitors, there was plenty of herring, gin, and beer for everyone.
TRIBUTE TO PIET MONDRIAN
On Thursday, June 14th, 2018, his Excellency Mr. Dolph Hogewoning, the Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in NY, unveiled a plaque at 1 Sheridan Square, Greenwich Village in New York. In the basement of this building was in the late 30’s early 40’s the former legendary jazz club Café Society located. This was called ‘the wrong place for the Right people’ and was the first non-segregated jazz club in America. The place was frequently visited by Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, and inspired him to make his last and one of his most famous paintings; Victory Boogie Woogie, which was a tribute to the city of New York.

– book presentation –
On Tuesday, April 2nd, 2018, the Dutch historian and writer Marc Dierikx visited TNC New York, to launch his book ‘Anthony Fokker – The Flying Dutchman who shaped American Aviation‘. He presented the first copy to Consul General Dolph Hogewoning.
Monday, February 12th, 2018, the Dutch acapella group ‘MAZE Voices’ visited The Netherland Club of New York for a beautiful concert. This award-winning group performed a broad selection of their repertoire, ranging from polyphonic classic to up-tempo pop, from unexpected covers to even a few Dutch sing-alongs.
The old Dutch children’s party of Sinterklaas was celebrated on Saturday, December 2nd, at The Netherland Club of New York together with ’t Klokhuis.
We were all very happy that Saint Nicholas came with many Pieten (his helpers), by taxi to TNC. But it soon became clear that he had taken the wrong suitcase from the airport. What to do? Because, Sint without his miter, his book, and all the presents, is not the real Sinterklaas. But… how could we get Sinterklaas’ suitcase back?
All kinds of things were thought up with the children to find a solution. Were there people with ‘red hats’ in the room? Or could the kids make a ‘temporary’ miter for the old man from Spain? Eventually, Piet succeeded, together with the pilot and two KLM flight attendants, to get all Sint’s lost belongings, just in time, back from the airport. It was a fantastic Sinterklaas party.
DUTCH MASTER DRAWING
Especially for The Netherland Club of NY, curator Ilona van Tuinen gave a private guided tour, about the Dutch master drawings in The Morgan Library & Museum’s Thaw Collection.
Ilona told us enthusiastically and lively about the beautiful works of Dutch masters like Rembrandt, van Gogh, Saenredam, and Mondrian and pointed out the special and characteristic details in their beautiful drawings.
