On Thursday, October 18th, 2018 The Netherland Club has a special combined TNCBOOK and TNCFILM event; the book presentation of Esther Gerritsen’s roman Craving (NL: Dorst, 2012), followed by the screening of the book’s filming, directed by Saskia Diesing (2018).

ESTHER GERRITSEN
Esther Gerritsen is one of the most established, widely read, and highly praised authors in the Netherlands. She was awarded the Frans Kellendonk Prize for her oeuvre in 2014. In 2016, Gerritsen had the honor of writing the Dutch Book Week gift, which had a print-run of 700,000 copies. Her bestseller Craving was praised by Herman Koch as “a gem among recent Dutch literature”. Craving is now finally available to the American reader in English translation. Esther will end her extensive US publicity tour with an event at TNC where she will read a short excerpt of Craving, and answer questions about her work.

Following the book presentation and the signing session, we will screen the film in the presence of Esther Gerritsen. Screening starts apr. 7:45 PM.

CRAVING  |  DORST
Craving is a Dutch comedy film, directed by Saskia Diesing. In July this year, the film was one of nine films shortlisted to be the Dutch entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards.Lovely, young Coco (Elise van ‘t Laar) has no idea what to do with her life. Plagued by numerous questions about her childhood, she is desperate for any kind of love. Based on the novel by one of Netherlands’ finest authors, Esther Gerritsen, who collaborated with director Saskia Diesing on the script, it is clear from the start that Coco’s relationship with her mother is strained, and her powerful older lover is rather dispassionate. When Coco learns her aloof, albeit charming mother Elisabeth (Simone Kleinsma) is terminally ill, she decides to move in and dedicate herself to caring for her even though her mother isn’t interested in having her there. The timeless question of what it means to be ‘family’ anchors Craving, and the three strong lead roles are perfectly cast in this very intimate, personal and lustful black comedy that runs the gamut from hilarious to, at times, outright uncomfortable.
