On Tuesday, October 9th, 2018, TNC will host ‘America Loves Europe‘. A special event to commemorate 70 years of Marshall Help. Willem Post, a Dutch expert on U.S. Presidency and Foreign Policy, will give a talk about this $14 billion aid programme, and its considerable and far-reaching economic, cultural and social Mondial consequences.
MARSHALL HELP – 70 YEARS
On April 26, 1948, the first Marshall aid goods from America arrived in the port of Rotterdam, on board of the MS Noordam of the Holland-America Line. According to former Prime Minister Willem Drees, the American aid was of the greatest importance for Dutch society, which stood “at the edge of the abyss”. In 1948 Drees said: “Never before in history was such a completely new experiment in International relations such a great success.” Ernst van der Beugel, the Dutch Marshall Plan diplomat-official, wrote: “There is no example of a superpower in history that not only supported the recovery of its allies, but also helped to create a new power center in the world.” Sixteen countries, including West Germany, received the then enormous amount of 14 billion dollars. A stable, democratic Europe was in the interest of the United States in those Cold War years. Willem Post will reflect on the consequences of the Marshall Help, and also point at the current international politics and plead that the United States and Europe must strengthen their historical strong ties even more.
